My Fun Hair Color Journey
Since I was about 15 I LOVED dying my hair fun rainbow colors. I've been blonde since birth and sometimes get sick of it so I like having some fun different hair every so often to shake things up.
As I'm sure all of you can tell from the blog, my fav color is pink. 90% of the things I own are pink. I'm actually wearing pink as I type this.
When I was about 15 I was finally allowed to dye my hair a fun color. The only thing my mom would let me do was get a little streak and at the the time I was a big fan of Avril Lavigne so I got her classic pink streak from the back in the day.
These are the best photos I have to show you. Let's please not judge 15 year old Emily.
This ended up being a little bit of a disaster. I had gotten it done in the States at a beauty school. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing.
Whatever temporary dye they used, It actually ended up permanently staining my hair for about two years. So, I had a GINGER streak in my hair for two years. Not fun.
You can see the faded pink in this photo here. It got even worse to a ginger though at one stage.
The following summer however, I had gotten my own hair dye to it myself. I had a vision of what I wanted and I was determined.
I purchased the hair dye from Manic Panic which are vegan and cruelty free! I had looked up reviews and tutorials of people using it and they said it faded in about 2 weeks so it was near perfect for what I wanted since it had to be out of my hair by the time school started back.
I basically wanted unicorn hair and with the help of my mom I think I got it! This time instead of a streak, I went for the dip dye and it was probably one of my favorite colors I did.
The hair dye I specifically used was the Amplified Squeeze Bottle. The colors I used were Atomic Turquoise, Ultra Violet and a pink which I couldn't find on the website and cannot remember the name of so it must be discontinued.
The colors were blended from the ends up, pink to purple to turquoise.
The colors were blended from the ends up, pink to purple to turquoise.
(Thank God for puberty, amirite?)
That faded about after a week to two weeks so I dyed over it with just the Atomic Turquoise and it actually turned out a lot prettier than I anticipated! The purple and pink were still faintly there so with the turquoise over it, it turned an almost royal blue so it was still kind of like an ombre effect.
A year or two later I caught the bug again but this time I did something COMPLETELY different. I actually cannot tell you what hair dye I used because it was so long ago but I did purchase it in a Walgreens or CVS in the States.
It was a liquid in a tube that came with a wand brush very similar to a mascara wand that I ended up not using because it would take FOREVER if I did. It was the kind of hair dye that had a chalk consistency that washed out completely after one wash. I had the dye in pink and purple and didn't have very much of either so I decided to improvise and just do half and half!! I think it was pretty cool even if I only had it for two days.
Because I couldn't straighten or curl my hair, I put it in the braids for the first day and the second day I had the lovely curl to it!
Skip to less than later and I got bored again!
I still had some of that Manic Panic hair dye left over so I used that again! It had been awhile since I had gotten highlights so the growth at my roots was pretty bad and I wanted to try something different and cool. This time, I used the Ultra Violet to dye my under layer and I have to say, I really loved the result. It faded into a pretty cool grey/ silver color and then completely after a couple of weeks or so before it faded completely.
Couple of months into college I dyed my hair AGAIN. Again, using the remainder of the Manic Panic hair dye. My bff helped me do it to keep it even. We blended the Atomic Turquoise to the root where we put the Ultra Violet.
I LOVED it. However, the dye might have been expired because the turquoise stained my hair for MONTHS. I had a green streak in the middle of my hair for quite sometime that was just not very cute.
Here's the best pic I have to show you that GREEN! It was pretty awful but yano, life moves on and it eventually faded.
That summer I desperately wanted pink hair and turned to my friend Aimee Monroe who has had nearly ever color under the sun for some help. She recommended I used Bleach London in Rose and after looking at various pics online and concluding that it was EXACTLY what I want, I gave it a shot and here was the product! I've done a review on this product and another really special one which I'll link here
So, that's all of my phone Hair Dye Jobs almost all DIY to date! I'm sure there will be plenty more in the future. Hope you enjoyed.
